Camp Simpirre
A large thatched lounge with log posts and a stone-and-timber rail, sitting on a rocky ridge above dark rock and a palm tree, under a clear blue sky.

About

Where comfort meets wilderness

A retreat and culture and education centre at Gotu.

Aerial view of a bend in the brown Ewaso Ng'iro River, with rocky banks, green bush, a turquoise swimming pool and thatched and tin-roofed cottages scattered among the trees.

The camp

About 87 kilometres north of Isiolo town, deep in the heart of the Waso ecosystem and on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River, stands Camp Simpirre Retreat and Culture Educational Centre.

The camp has fifty permanent tents, cottages and traditional Boran huts, and sleeps up to 75 guests. It also has conference space for events of 500 people and more, a riverside lounge, a swimming pool, the Waso Museum and a culture and nature education programme.

What Simpirre means

Simpirre is an Oromo name that means "bird". Birds are plentiful here, and the viewing is good: fish eagles, vultures, hornbills, kingfishers, herons and ostriches are among the species found around the camp.

Close-up of a shallow soda pool at Magado Crater, with a pink and red crust and a darker red patch of brine.

The land around us

The Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves are all within a day's visit. Closer in are Gotu Falls, the Gotu springs with their clean spring water, and the Magado Crater, where herders water their livestock and soda is mined.

See things to do

A long hall of wooden display cases holding traditional cloth, beadwork, gourds and tools, with information boards beside a rope barrier.

Learning and the land

The camp hosts a culture and nature education programme for children and youth, supported by Kivulini Trust. It also runs the Waso Museum and is creating a greenbelt to restore the land and grow a wider variety of food.
